STEVEN J. MANDEL: People come to us when losing for them is not an option. My firm is based around the quote of J.P. Morgan, who said, "I don't want a lawyer to tell me what I can't do. I hire him to tell me how to do what I want to do."

I went to law school because I wanted to help regular people with their everyday problems. And that's why I opened up my own law firm about 25 years ago.

Growing up in Brooklyn, I learned the only thing that luck gets you is a parking space. Everything else comes from hard work and design. I also learned that if you focus on the solution, the problems take care of themselves. That's what I do. I'm not looking at the problem. The problem is there. People come to me because they want me to figure out the solution.

When a client comes to my office, I ask them to give me three lists --a wish list, a want list, and a need list--because we all have things that we wish for. We all have things that we want. And we all have things that we truly need to be happy. Those are the things I focus on first.

I win so many cases just because I work harder and care more than the other side. I truly do. I say I'm a counselor at law because that's what I do. I counsel my clients through what might often be the most difficult times of their lives.
