The star of the television show 'Two and a Half Men" that is hugely popular with audiences in New York and around the country is finding out that art sometimes indeed imitates life. Actor Jon Cryer's ex-wife has filed a petition in a California court requesting a substantial increase in the child support payments he is currently making to their 13-year-old son. The couple divorced in 2004 after being married for five years.
Cryer, who plays a divorced father on the show, is currently paying $8,000 per month in child support, and the mother has requested that it be increased to $50,000 per month. She believes that since her share of custody had risen from 4 percent to 50 percent, the amount of support should increase as well. She claims that the payments are necessary so that she can afford to maintain the lifestyle that their son enjoys when living with his father, as the son currently "experiences two different lifestyles depending on which parent he's with."
The mother also claims that she wants to be able to provide her son with the luxuries and experiences that his private school classmates enjoy, including foreign vacations, summer camps, expensive clothing and cell phones. Her petition indicated that she felt an increase would be justified as she is currently unemployed while her ex-husband makes $2 million per month from his acting career.
A well-known divorce attorney who is not connected with the case has publicly stated that he feels that her "continuity of lifestyle" claim has no legal validity. The mother is also requesting that Cryer pay her legal fees. Neither parent has spoken publicly about the matter.
