…that New York is the only state that requires actual grounds for divorce?

In New York, a party may file for divorce on limited grounds:

  1. Cruel and inhuman treatment against the plaintiff;
  2. Abandonment of the plaintiff for a period of at least one year;
  3. Confinement of the defendant in prison for three or more consecutive years during the marriage;
  4. Adultery; or
  5. Legal separation for one or more years.
